Considerations
- Federally funded research is required to be stored using a plan that has been approved by WVU Information Security and is supported by WVU ITS. DropBox, external drives, USB drives and cloud services are not approved for federally funded research data.
- WVU is currently developing a cost structure for the storage plans. While research projects and departments are not currently directly charged for storage, it is anticipated that there will be additional charges within the next few years.
- PIs developing proposal budgets should use this as a guide. If data storage requirements are estimated at over 2TB, PIs should request a consultation to be sure the estimate included in the proposal budget is accurate.
- Students who are employed by WVU and are listed on a research project, are required to use the storage plans for employees.
- The following activities are not considered research under the HHS Common Rule definition of research and therefore do not require an IRB review: Activities That Do Not Meet the Federal Definition (PDF).
- Compliance for data supporting these activities falls under WVU institutional policies and WVU Health System (for medical record access) and is not subject to research compliance and data policies.
- Contact the WVU Help Desk for access and support.
